Event Recap: Inspirational Evening About Sports – June 11, 2025
On a beautiful summer evening, the historic grounds of V.O.C. Rotterdam — one of the Netherlands’ oldest football clubs — set the stage for a memorable alumni gathering centered around the theme of sports and inspiration.
Against the scenic backdrop of sunlit sports fields, guests enjoyed an intimate and thought-provoking evening filled with powerful personal stories and engaging discussions. The program opened with a warm welcome, followed by a captivating keynote from Dr. Arne van Lienden, PhD candidate and lecturer at Erasmus University. His insights into the intersection of sports, media, and diversity sparked deep reflection and set the tone for the night.
Two outstanding Erasmus University student-athletes took the stage to share their remarkable journeys.
-
Nur Al Jawahiri, medical student and Sparta Rotterdam footballer, spoke candidly about the discipline and determination it takes to balance professional sport with academic ambition.
-
Selma Konijn, Olympic canoeist and Orthopedagogy student, gave an emotional and inspiring talk about the highs and lows of pursuing excellence both in the classroom and in elite sports.
The audience was highly engaged throughout the evening, asking thoughtful questions and connecting with the speakers on a personal level. The open atmosphere created space for vulnerability, emotion, and real connection — with plenty of time after the formal program for networking drinks and continued conversation.
The evening was a true celebration of the Erasmus spirit — where intellect, ambition, and community come together.
