Grenzen Voorbij Beyond Borders | Erasmus Alumni Club at Fenix

An Afternoon of Art, Migration Stories and Meaningful Encounters at Fenix.

On Friday 11 September, Erasmus alumni are invited to discover Fenix, Rotterdam’s art museum about migration. Through art, personal stories and conversation, we will explore themes of migration, identity and belonging while meeting alumni from different backgrounds and disciplines.

The afternoon is jointly organised by the Positive Impact Circle and the Art & Culture Circle, two Erasmus Alumni Club communities that bring alumni together around shared interests.

Located in a restored historic harbour warehouse in Katendrecht, Fenix gives space to migration stories from around the world, presented through art, photography and personal experiences. Highlights include the Suitcase Labyrinth, powerful documentary photography and the iconic Tornado staircase overlooking Rotterdam and the Maas.

The afternoon begins with the opportunity to explore the museum independently, followed by an exclusive guided tour for Erasmus alumni. Afterwards, we will continue at Plein, Fenix’s covered city square, for a talk by Anne Kremers, Director of Fenix and Erasmus alumna, and Berfu Ege Soge, board member of the Positive Impact Circle, followed by drinks.

The programme will be held in English. Places are limited, so early registration is recommended.

Speakers

Anne Kremers is Director of Fenix and an alumna of Erasmus University Rotterdam. From 2013 to 2017, she led Museum Villa Mondriaan in Winterswijk, in the eastern Netherlands. She was appointed at the age of 24, making her the youngest museum director in the Netherlands at the time.

Between 2017 and 2020, Kremers worked for the Chow Tai Fook Art Foundation in Hong Kong, where she developed innovative art and design projects. She subsequently returned to the Netherlands to take up her position at Fenix.

Berfu Ege Soge, board member of the Positive Impact Circle, will join us to talk about her upcoming book Impact by Design: Creating Certainty and Impact in a World of Complexity.

The word 'impact' gets used so often, and so differently by different people, that it has started to lose its weight. Ege Sobe's book sets out to fix that, offering a shared language and a practical toolkit through the Impact Compass, a framework built around four dimensions at once: environment, economy, society, and the individual, so leaders, founders and investors can turn the idea of impact into something they can actually build.

About the Circles

Circles are communities within the Erasmus Alumni Club that bring alumni together around shared interests.

The Positive Impact Circle connects alumni who want to inspire and learn from one another and contribute to positive societal change. The Art & Culture Circle brings alumni together through a shared interest in art, ideas and culture.

For this event, the two Circles join forces to explore how art can offer new perspectives on migration, identity and belonging.

Who is this event for?

This event is open to all Erasmus alumni with an interest in art, culture, migration or social impact. No prior knowledge of art or the museum is required.

Whether you would like to discover Fenix, exchange perspectives with other alumni or simply spend an inspiring afternoon in Rotterdam, you are welcome to join.
